Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Do you have a great idea to improve your area?

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Applications for Year 7 Selective High School Placement in 2019

Applications for selective high school placement in Year 7 in 2019 open on 10 October 2017 and close on 13 November 2017 at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7.

The Selective High School Placement Test is on 15 March 2018.

Selective high schools cater for the specific needs of high achieving gifted students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. Selective schools help gifted and talent students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level. Parents apply when the student is in Year 5. The students sit the test in March of Year 6.

STOP WORK MEETING

This Thursday 8th December the Teachers' Federation is holding a stop work meeting. There will be minimal supervision at Mayfield East Public School during the stop work meeting. Normal classes will not operate between 9am and 10.30am.

Full supervision will be available from 10.30am when normal classes will resume. A bell will sound at 10.30am and children are asked to assemble under the COLA as per normal school procedure at the start of each day.

Kindergarten 2017 Transition Program

On Monday 25th July the senior tap troupe performed at the Hunter Dance Festival. They tapped enthusiastically to the song 'Hello' by Adele. They looked amazing and represented our school with pride.

The cost is $350 per child. Activities include: National Museum of Australia, Electoral Education. Embassy Tour, Parliament House, Australian War Memorial, Mount Ainslie Lookout, rock climbing. Questacon and the Australian Institute of Sport. The cost includes accommodation, entry for all activities, all meals (except morning tea and lunch on the 1st day) and transport by coach. The P&C will be holding their annual Father's Day Stall on Wednesday 2nd September. Children will be able to purchase a small gift to give to their father, step father or other significant male. All gifts are priced at $2 or $5. It would be appreciated if younger children brought their money to school on the day in an envelope clearly marked with their name and class. Our traditional Father's Day Breakfast will be held on Friday 4th September in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen from 7:45am to 8:30am. Science Week at MEPS

This week we are celebrating Science Week at Mayfield East Public School. On Wednesday 16th August all students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will be watching a Science Smart Laser Show during the day in the hall. The cost is $5 per child payable at the office. We will also be holding a MAD SCIENTEST! disco on Wednesday evening. Children from K-2 are invited to come along between 5pm and 6pm and 3-6 from 6:15pm to 7pm. Wear your best 'mad scientist' outfit. Please pay at the door on the night. On Friday 21st August we will be holding our Science Fair. Students are looking forward to participating in some fantastic activities during the day.

Grandparents Day

It was wonderful to see so many parents and grandparents at our school last Friday for Education Week. We really appreciate the strong bonds our school has with the community. From talking to some grandparents, I realised that some people had travelled up to four hours just to attend our special day. Also Mr Harrison co ordinated with Charlestown Square for our tap troupe to showcase their skills. They really wowed the shoppers with their dancing!

The CUA are offering a $5000 grant in order for schools to put an idea for positive change into action. The big idea Mayfield is currently working towards, is developing an environmental playground. Mayfield East was a piolot school for trialling the SCORES program to help students increase their physical exerise by practising fundamental movement skills. The program showed that as little as 12 extra minutes of exercise a day has dramatically improved the fitness of students.

National Schools Tree Day

On Friday the 25th of July, 4/5/6T participated in National Schools Tree Day. This event sees students educated on the importance of nature preservation.

This year more than 2500 schools across the country took part, and in Newcastle some future conservationists were unearthed.

Welcome to Kindergarten students who have started at MEPS this week. You look wonderful in your school uniforms and you are doing a very good job of being at big school. Keep packing your fruit break, water and remember a hat!!

This group of Kindergarten is unique as these students are the first to be taught the new National Curriculum for English, Mathematics and Science, for NSW, from the very start of their school life. Schools across the country have been preparing for the implementation of the new curriculum with the compulsory implementation of the English syllabus beginning this year. Mayfield East PS welcomes new pupils with exciting learning programs based on these brand new syllabus documents.

Art Gallery

Three 1P students, Sapphire McCrcken, Ada Richards and Liam White have been chosen to exhibit artworks at Maitland Regional Art Gallery as part of their 'Face' exhibition opening on 26th October. These pupils submitted their drawings, ceramics and paintings and were selected to have their work shown at the gallery.

School Band Survey

The P & C would like to know the level of parent and student interest in establishing a school band.

School bands require significant commitment of time and money for school families. This short parent survey (8 questions) will give the P & C an indication of whether or not establishing a band program is a viable option at Mayfield East Public School. Big School For Little Kids

Mayfield East Public School's "Big School For Little Kids" is a wonderful free transition / orientation program that supports children before they start kindergarten. Our 18 week program runs every Friday for two and a half hours. The program for 2013 begins Friday 20th July, 2012 and concludes Friday 30th November, 2012. A parent information session will be held on Friday 22nd June, 2012 at 9am and will be followed by a morning tea in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen. Please contact the school to arrange an appointment and tour of the facilities with the principal, Alan Watt. Information about the program can also be found in the attached Powerpoint presentation. Breakfast Club

At Mayfield East Public School we run a Breakfast Club each morning free of charge. It is open to all students who are allowed to turn up any day without notice and will be supplied a healthy breakfast to start the day. The Breakfast Club is generously run by volunteers and is open from 8.30am to 8.45am. It can be found in the old staffroom near the administration building.

Mayfield East Public School is fortunate to have a dedicated team of teachers and support staff working to achieve the best possible learning opportunities for our students. Our school believes in community partnerships and values the contributions of everyone making a difference for our students.

Our school focuses on traditional values, supporting innovative practice in teaching and learning and celebrating outstanding achievement. Being a Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden school, students are taught life skills, nutrition and sustainability as elements of their education. Our school pursues academic success for all students by implementing quality teaching programs in literacy and numeracy, additional support programs such as reading recovery, MULTI-LIT and new arrival programs.

Our aim is to develop and uphold community values by explicitly teaching good manners, mutual respect for all and responsibility for your own behaviour. The school is well resourced including the employment of additional staff to reduce class sizes. We boast a new hall, full student kitchen, extensive gardens, orchards, wood-fire pizza oven and beautiful playground areas. Extra curricular activities are offered to all students such as School Aerobics, Active After School Communities, Debating, Public Speaking, Choir and school bands.

Book Week Celebrations

On Wednesday 24th August, Mayfield East Public School will be celebrating Book Week. A special assembly will be held where each class will perform an item from a country around the world. This embraces this year's book theme "One World Many Stories". The School Choir and the Drumming Group will also showcase their talents during this assembly. The assembly will commence at 1:30pm in the school hall.

Book Fair

A Book Fair will be held in our school library to assist in continuing our Book Week celebrations. Mrs Evelyn Bayl, our school librarian, has organised through Central Book Supplies a variety of quality books and stationery items to be available for purchasing. What a great way to assist our nightly reading program or getting a head start on the Premier's Reading Challenge for 2012. The Book Fair will be held on:

Foods From Around The World

The Stephanie Alexander Garden Kitchen Program will also be supporting Book Week by cooking food from various countries. Mrs Nicole Kerr has been excitedly planning a variety of wonderful meals for our students to prepare. During this week the canteen will also be selling food to highlight the diversity and multicultural influences of our school community.

This is going to be a great Book Week. We would love to see as many parents and community members coming along to help celebrate and enjoy our student's talents and successes.

Environment Week

Last term we held our 'Green Day' to raise awareness of our environment. Students and teachers came dressed in green and participated in a range of activities including a waste audit, colouring competition, water watch activities, workshops with students from Callahan College Waratah Campus and a special performance from the Australian Reptile Park.
